Dakota Johnson confirms that she’ll star in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man spinoff film, Madame Web, in her social media post.
Sony has been building its own Marvel shared universe for the last few years. This effort took off when Venom became a surprise box office hit in 2018. Sony also started looking into its library of Marvel characters for other heroes and villains to adapt. The studio eventually pinpointed Madame Web as another hero worthy of their own movie.
Development on Madame Web began in 2019 when Sony hired Morbius writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the script. It was then announced in 2020 that Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson would be at the helm of Sony’s first female-led Marvel movie.
